U.S. futures are flattish after ending Monday just off the lows of the day as investors await key inflation data, with the July consumer price index (CPI) report expected later this morning around 8:30 am. Economists have warned for months about rising inflation due to U.S. tariffs, but to this point, Wall Street hasn’t seen too much. The first real sign of rising inflation came two weeks ago, with a sharp increase in the June PCE index, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge. But next up is the consumer-price index where the core CPI, which excludes volatile food and gas, is forecast to rise an elevated 0.3% in July — the biggest increase in six months. If the forecast is spot on, the rate of core inflation in the past 12 months would rise a few notches to 3.1%, pushing it further away from the Fed’s 2% goal. The overall CPI, meanwhile, is expected to rise 0.2% in July. The 12-month rate could rise to 2.9% from 2.8%. Shares on Wall Street closed modestly lower after the Nasdaq posted a record closing high for a second straight session last Friday. U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday extending a pause in sharply higher U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports for another 90 days, a White House official said, in a move that was widely expected. In Asian markets, The Nikkei Index surged 897 points to 42,718, the Shanghai Index rose 18 points to 3,665, and the Hang Seng Index gained 62 points to 24,969. In Europe, the German DAX is down -93 points to 23,987, while the FTSE 100 rises 13 points to 9,143.
